I am so happy to announce my first quilt along at Material Girl Quilts! I hope you will join me as we choose our favorite layer cakes to create the Layer Cake Sampler Quilt.
For this quilt, we will be using 2 layer cakes to make twenty 16″ finished blocks (one print layer cake and one solid). I have already finished a quilt using layout option #1 (shown below).
Layout Option #1:
- Finished Size: 80” x 98”
- Fabric Requirements:
- 1 print layer cake (blocks)
- 1 solid layer cake or 3 yards cut into 40 – 10” squares (blocks)
- 1 ¾ yard solid for sashing (cut carefully, there is very little extra)
- ¼ yard or fat quarter for cornerstone squares
- 1 yard for border
- ¾ yard for binding
- 6 yards for backing
Here is layout option #2 which is what I’ll be working on during the quilt along. It has 16 of the 2o blocks on the front and I plan to use 4 of my blocks pieced into the back.
Layout Option #2:
- Finished Size: 79 ½” x 79 ½”
- Fabric Requirements:
- 1 print layer cake (blocks)
- 1 solid layer cake or 3 yards cut into 40 – 10” squares (blocks)
- 2 yards solid for sashing/borders (cut carefully, there is very little extra)
- ¾ yard for binding
- 5 yards for backing
Of course you can create your own finishing layout once your blocks are pieced too! I can’t wait to see everyone’s variations of the sampler when we are done.

March 28th – Blocks 11 & 12 (halfway link up with prizes!!)
April 4th – Blocks 13 & 14
April 11th – Blocks 15 & 16
April 18th – Blocks 17 & 18
April 25th – Blocks 19 & 20
May 2nd – Final quilt layout options and piecing instructions
May 16th – Finished Layer Cake Sampler Quilt top link up (with fabulous prizes to be given to several randomly chosen winners!!)
This schedule should allow plenty of time for everyone to get their blocks done and also allow for late comers to join in on the fun

I think I may have FINALLY found a project to use my 1/3 yard cuts of blues and greens I purchased at my LQS a while back (we won’t specify how far back!) along with dark brown background fabric. I know I’ll have to cut them down, but I think this will be the perfect project, plus I can make a few extra blocks to make it bigger! Plus, there should be plenty of motivation to get this done finally by following along. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely project with all of us!

Hey Amanda – My sewing group that meets on the 3rd Thursday every month is doing the Sampler Quilt Along. Everyone is very excited!! Love the quilt I made when I made all the blocks.
