Granddaughter's Flower Garden {a finished quilt!!}
I’ve been dreaming of making this quilt for a year now. I first saw Bev’s (of Flamingo Toes) Vintage Garden pattern at quilt market last May and FELL IN LOVE!! When I originally designed my Fairy Edith fabric, I had intended to make an oversized hexagon flower quilt reminiscent of the Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt that my Great Grandma Fairy made years ago. Out of the several new quilts I had sketched for Fairy Edith, I decided I could only handle creating two new patterns at the time and that quilt didn’t pan out. So, when this pattern came along, it was perfect! I’m naming my version of this quilt Granddaughter’s Flower Garden and I know Grandma Fairy would love it.
Bev’s quilt pattern finishes at a generous 72” x 86”, but I really wanted a quilt for our king sized bed, so I added more blocks to create this enormous 114” x 104” version. This thing really is huge. I’m certain it’s the largest quilt I’ve made to date.
Given its size, I clearly had to send it out for quilting. I dropped it off on Wednesday and he had it ready by Thursday evening! Don’t you just love the interlocking circles design? These close up photos show the true colors in the quilt, but this thing is so difficult to photograph due to its size.
I finished the binding today and since we have sun, I asked my husband and son to help hold the quilt for a couple of photos. The bright sun didn’t make for the best photos, but you can see the quilting design really well.
Here’s the full quilt in all its glory!
And here are my boys (who are both at least 6’1”) having to stand on ladders to hold this thing up!! Our first attempt was in the shade of the trees, but the sun was behind them and it didn’t work very well…so we went to the other side of the pool for the direct sunlight option.
And here it is on our bed, ready to sleep under tonight. I’m such a happy girl today. Seeing this dream quilt finally come together has been good for my soul :)
