John Wayne {a finished quilt!!}
“Slap some bacon on a biscuit and let’s go! We’re burnin’ daylight!” That’s the John Wayne movie quote I relate to the most. Bacon and biscuits…the best way to start a day :) And you can ask anyone in my family, the moment my feet hit the floor in the morning, I’m ready to eat!
When I saw Riley Blake’s John Wayne fabric, I just knew I would have to create something for his biggest fan, my stepdad. The panel in the center is the perfect representation of the man I’ve seen in so many westerns that have played and replayed in my parents house over the years.
To surround the panel, I used a jelly roll to make rail fence blocks (tutorial can be found here). These blocks worked perfectly with the panel measurements. The finished size of this quilt is 60” x 66”, perfect for him to use on the recliner while watching the Duke on TV.
Another awesome print in this collection includes a collage of movie posters. It’s a great feature fabric for the back that I paired with a yellow bandana print on each side. Below is a closer look at the posters print. The colors and detail are great.
Even if you aren’t necessarily a John Wayne fan, I’m certain you probably know a little “cowboy” who would love the rest of the prints in this collection that make up the rail fence blocks. I love the deep red color.
If you’d like to make a John Wayne quilt for yourself or a special “pilgrim” in your life, check your local quilt shop for this collection and I’ve also found some on Etsy, fabric.com and Missouri Star Quilt Co.
I’ll leave you with one of John Wayne’s most famous quotes (not from a movie), “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” Great words to live by.
