Quilt Big Book Blog Tour {and a giveaway!}
I am so happy to be sharing my latest quilt finish as well as participating in a dear friend, Jemima Flendt’s blog tour for her second book, Quilt Big. I first met Jemima at spring quilt market in St. Louis in 2017. She is so kind and genuine, we hit it off immediately at a dinner one evening. I’ve loved seeing everything that she creates. Check out her website to see her creations for yourself and also the fun patterns she has available.
The premise behind the book Quilt Big is “Bigger Blocks for Faster Finishes” and let me tell you, it really is true! I’ve already finished two quilts from the patterns in this book. You can see my first finish, the Mosaic quilt here. For the blog tour, I decided to use her Log Cabin pattern. I loved the off-centered layout of the big log cabin blocks combined with a large amount of “negative space”. It is certainly a modern take on the traditional log cabin block, that makes this design quite unique.
The fabric I used is called Offshore 2 by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs. It was a treat to sew with these beach themed fabrics while it was snowing and so cold where I live. In fact, the day I had to take photos, it was -15 degrees with a windchill of -40 degrees! Needless to say, I wasn’t able to get any pretty outside shots of this quilt - so the lighting isn’t the best. You have to trust me when I say the fabric is beautiful with the richest shades of blues, teals and reds.
Below is a sneak peek at the back of the quilt. One of the cool things about the Quilt Big book is that Jemima includes a number of coordinating pieced quilt back options. The end result is a very cool two sided quilt when finished!
It is so difficult to try and choose a favorite print in this collection. The VW buses, beach cottages and surfboards are all so fun! I think if I HAD to choose, it would probably be the sea turtles. Love the outline design of them as well as the colors.
Below is a better shot of the back of the quilt. With very large piecing, it went together quickly and adds so much more interest than a single fabric on the back.
The plaid print was a perfect finish touch as the binding. I can’t tell you how much I love this quilt and how quick it was to piece together. Fast finishes are always some of my favorites, but the nice thing about Jemima’s book, is that these designs are still quite beautiful and interesting - not just simple patchwork squares They give the illusion of being more difficult and time consuming than they really are.
