Stadium Quilt {FREE pattern for a beginner friendly striped quilt to display your team spirit!!}

Who out there has school spirit?!? I can assure you that spirit runs deep with me for Avon High School! My husband and I both graduated from Avon. I was a cheerleader and my brothers and I played multiple sports and were in performing arts. My son now attends Avon and is in their World class marching band and drumline.

So, it’s safe to say that my rear end has spent a bit of time in bleachers supporting our school. During those times, we often have a quilt to fold up for a cushion or wrap around us when it’s cold outside. But none of those quilts showcased our school spirit like this one!

I love a simple striped quilt and decided that would be a perfect backdrop for adding an appliqued school logo. Obviously black and gold are our school colors and the Texture basic designed by Sandy Gervais was a perfect choice to use in this quilt. It has the look of a solid, but adds much more depth with the “texture” ;-)

For the logo, I chose to do machine applique by applying a fusible interfacing and finishing it off with a blanket stitch around the edges.

Simple straight line quilting always works for a striped quilt.

For the backing fabric, I chose a new basic designed by Melissa Mortenson called Sparkler. It’s awesome and has a bit of metallic gold added in!!

The quilt finishes at 60” x 72” and here’s my son sporting it on his back. This one was made as a donation quilt to be raffled at a school fundraiser, but I have a feeling I’ll be making another one for him soon :)

Check out my tutorial below to learn how to make this quilt (including a simpler version without applique) and you can also download the free printable pattern here.
