Fat Quarter Churn Dash {quilt tutorial}

Have you ever made a Churn Dash quilt? The Churn Dash is a very old 9-Patch quilt block pattern, originating between 1800 and 1849! Its name is a result of the resemblance of the triangle and rectangle perimeter of the block to a butter churn and the center square to the stick (or “dash”) of the butter churn. Isn’t it so fun to find out the history of old quilt blocks?!

Since this is such a traditional block, it’s likely that you’ve at least seen it before even if you’ve never made a Churn Dash quilt.

I have been struggling with the winter blues a bit here in Indiana and needed to work on something that felt like spring. So I pulled together 12 bright/springy fat quarters from my stash and decided that this block would be a wonderful option to use and help me sew away my winter blues ;-)

Now that it’s complete, this quilt is absolutely perfect for spring! It’s bright, cheery and just what I needed.

I also recently purchased a new sewing table from Arrow Sewing that I’m already in love with. I ordered a custom insert so that my machine will sit down into the table and be flush with the table top, but have to wait a couple of weeks before that arrives. Once it is complete, I promise to share more details, but look at all of that table top space to hold up my quilt as I’m working on it!!

Below is a detail photo to show the simple loops design I used for the quilting and another fun backing fabric that also looks fantastic on the binding.

My quilt finishes at 54” x 72” and was made using 12 fat quarters. This pattern is easily adjustable in size by changing the number of fat quarters used.
