Square Chain quilt {beautiful queen size quilt made with pre-cut 10" squares!}
This month’s new pattern is called Square Chain. I love a good “chain” quilt pattern and this one is perfect because the alternating blocks use pre-cut 10” squares which allow you to showcase all of the beautiful fabrics within a collection.
You won’t be cutting the 10” squares at all before piecing them into this quilt, so it’s the perfect pattern to use with large scale prints (I can imagine this in several Ruby Star or Anna Maria Horner collections!!)
For the “chain” blocks, I teach you how to strip piece portions of the block for more efficient sewing. You can see this method in the video linked below.
For the quilting, I chose a pantograph pattern named Bountiful Feathers and I love how well it works for this quilt and these fabrics.
With the simple piecing instructions included in this pattern, it is a great option for beginning quilters, but also a nice quick bed-sized finish for quilters with more advanced skills as well.
The fabric I chose for this quilt is called Nutmeg by Basic Grey. I love the colors and it reminds me a bit of fall, but will look perfect in our bedroom. For the quilt back I found a 108” wide back fabric by Art Gallery Fabrics that coordinates perfectly. When making large bed quilts, I do like the option of wide backs as it is often more economical when you only need to buy 3 yards (versus 8 1/2 yards of 42” cotton fabric). The no piecing of a quilt back is just an added bonus!
