How to Hang a Small Wall or Mini Quilt

I have had a number of people ask me how I hang my quilts (especially after I posted my Inside Addition mini quilt yesterday), so I thought I'd share it here. This is just one method, but it is my favorite for smaller quilts (it works best for anything 30" wide or less).

Materials needed:

Two fabric scraps cut into squares (4" to 10" depending on the size of the quilt)
Small dowel rod with a length that is approximately the width of your finished quilt (can be found at hardware stores, Joann's, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

1. Cut two squares from scrap fabric. I usually use the same fabric as the backing so that it blends, but it's against the wall, so no one will see it if you don't have enough. The size of your quilt will determine the size of the squares to cut. I don't have a hard/fast rule on this, just see what looks about right and will provide enough coverage to support your dowel. The Inside Addition quilt finished at 20" square, so I cut my hanging squares at 6" each.

2. Fold each square on the diagonal to create two triangles. Press on the fold line.

3. Before adding your binding, pin one triangle to each of the top two corners of your quilt. Make sure to align the raw edges of the triangles with the raw edges of the quilt.

4. Sew down your binding using your preferred method and making sure to catch the raw edges of the triangles as shown.

5. If necessary, trim down your dowel rod to a length that is approximately 1"-2" less than your quilt width. I have found that my garden clippers (used to trim rose bushes) works great for this step!

6. Now just slide your dowel up underneath the hanging triangles and you are ready to hang your quilt. I find that a simple nail is always enough to hang the smaller quilts because they don't weigh too much.
