Lady of the Lake {quilt block tutorial}

You may recall that last year when the pandemic started, a number of designers for Riley Blake created a weekly quilt block challenge (you can see the mini quilt I made using those blocks here). Well, it was so fun and successful, we are doing it again this year!

I had intended to sew along and make a block each week, but sometimes life just happens and I can’t get everything on my list done. Today I’m sharing my block challenge submission, the Lady of the Lake.

As a lover of half square triangles, I have always admired the Lady of the Lake block. While researching its origin, I learned that this quilt block was first used in 1820 and named after a wildly popular poem written by Sir Walter Scott published in 1810 that included a contest among three men to win the love of one woman. The history of classic quilt blocks always fascinates me :)

To piece this block, I used two prints from my upcoming fabric collection, Winterland (in shops July 2021). I’m in love with how it turned out! Now I want to make an entire quilt with Lady of the Lake blocks.

The Riley Blake Designs block challenge started in February and will run until June, but it’s never too late to join in on the fun! You can find out all of the details including block patterns, designer names, fabric requirements, etc. on Riley Blake’s website - here. They’ll also be sharing a layout option at the end when you complete all 16 blocks!
