Bear Tracks {a fat quarter friendly quilt pattern!}

The Bear Paw is a traditional block that has been around since the 1800’s. The traditional block features four “paws” facing out from a square in the center of the block. An example of that block (including a piecing tutorial) can be found here.

For this quilt, I switched up the direction of those paws and removed the center square. Meet Bear Tracks :)

I think that changing the direction of the paws gives this quilt some interesting movement. I also love that it is perfect for using only a fat quarter bundle and some background fabric.

The fabric I used for this quilt is In the Afterglow by Minki Kim for Riley Blake Designs. Aren’t the colors and florals in this collection so pretty? I really love the addition of the black background prints as a wonderful contrast against the lighter springy shades.

The Bear Tracks quilt uses 15 fat quarters and finishes at a lovely 60” x 72” throw size. Of course If you have a large fat quarter bundle and would like to make a bed sized quilt or even if you’d like to make a smaller baby quilt, you can easily adjust this pattern to suit your needs. You will get a total of eight “paws” from each fat quarter.

For the quilting I used a reduced size version of the Sashiko digital pantograph and I love all of the yummy texture it creates!
